Symposium in Yamaguchi on Freedom of Religion

The “Symposium to Protect Freedom of Religion in Yamaguchi Prefecture” – hosted by the Yamaguchi Prefecture Peace Ambassador Council – which raised questions about the dissolution order request for the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (formerly the Unification Church), was held on 27^th October 2024, in Yamaguchi City. Shunsuke Uotani (魚谷俊輔), Secretary General of UPF Japan, and Attorney Tatsuki Nakayama (中山達樹) gave lectures, attracting an audience of approximately 300 people.

Attorney Tatsuki Nakayama emphasized that “beauty does not distort, but correctness can.” He suggested that judges tend to choose rulings that align with public opinion, and encouraged attendees to help boost public sentiment that “dissolution is unjust.”

Uotani referred to an international conference organized by UPF in September 2021, where former U.S. President Donald Trump and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (安倍晋三) sent video messages. He explained, “UPF is not a religious organization but a UN-affiliated NGO. The goals of UPF and former Prime Minister Abe’s political principles aligned, which is why he sent a video message.”

Additionally, local second-generation believers shared their personal experiences. A fourth-year male student at Yamaguchi University, who is involved in a community problem-solving project such as vegetable farming at the university, claimed that he was rejected by society due to his faith, stating,

“When people found out I was a second-generation member of the Family Federation, they cut ties with me.”
